A Day in Perth
By Dan Murphy on Feb 23, 2008 in Music
The other day our group of American students took the train to Perth for a day in the big city. Perth is commonly known as the world’s most isolated city. The next closest place that we would consider to be a city is at least 3 hours away by plane, but Perth still has plenty to offer. We spent a few hours walking around checking out the sites such as Bell Tower and London Court. London Court is a shopping center that looks like it was lifted right out of Europe (See picture below) and Bell Tower is a new, crazy looking building right at the end of the Swan River which runs from Perth down to Fremantle. The highlight of the trip was definitely King’s Park - it is a must see for any one on the west coast of Australia. The park is located on a hill that looks over the surprisingly impressive skyline of the city with a good view of the river. It is full of native plants and war memorials and provides some beautiful scenery. While we were there we got to see a few traditional aboriginal dances. The four male dancers acted out different parts of their lives to the music of a didgeridoo. There were certain moves that all of the dancers did, but other than it was very spontaneous and they kind of did what they felt. I was able to talk to the didgeridoo player for a little while afterwards and he was explaining how to play, hopefully I will be able to give it a try at some point in the next four months.
