Taste of Oz
By Dan Murphy on Mar 5, 2008 in Food and Drink
Last night I grilled myself some kangaroo steaks. It was cheap and easy and some of the juiciest meat I’ve eaten. This was my second helping of kangaroo since I’ve been down here and I think I will make it a regular meal. The first time was at a restaurant called Little Creatures right across the park from our house. They served it on skewers with chutney, which is kind of like applesauce, to dip it in. Other than the ‘roo their isn’t too much difference in the food here. We did go out for Thai food one night and that was good and authentic. It was not as spicy as Thai food in the states, but tasted really good even though it took about an hour to get to us. Other than that I have been surviving off of a lot of peanut butter sandwiches and silverside, which is some kind of salty ham cold cuts. I have been trying to save money for the more important part of my diet here… drinking.
Bars are not cheap down under, most beers will cost you about 8 dollars for a pint, but we are slowly discovering ways to survive. Boxed wine is good, cheap way to get ready for the bars. Then when I go out I’ve been keeping it to one or two good-tasting beers. American beers are almost non-existent down here (especially Foster’s) but there are plenty of local good ones. The best I’ve had so bar is called Brass Monkey Stout, which gave Guinness a run for it’s money. I highly recommend it. Carlton Draught and Victoria Bitter (V.B.) are the two most common beers around and pretty much any bar or pub you go to will have both on tap. The cheapest beer I’ve found so far is called Emu Bitter - which tastes about as good as you would expect a bitter emu to taste. It was 6.00 for a pint and was pretty close to Natty Light or Keystone. There are also plenty of microbreweries that I have been slowly trying, if anyone has any suggestions let me know. And don’t worry mom and dad, I have been going to class every once in a while too.
Enjoying my Brass Monkey at the Sail & Anchor with a few of my roomates.
